7 rules for casual business dress

If you think that just removing the tie makes you wear business casual you’re wrong. This dress code has its own rules. I invite you to meet them.

Casual business attire (also known as Business Casual) allows you to wear a more comfortable outfit without losing professionalism. However, many men are mistaken in practice because they do not know the details to take care of. So that you know how to dress correctly in the office I share below 7 rules for casual business dress:

casual business dress

1) There are 2 levels of formality

You can wear a 2-piece suit (jacket and pants of the same color) or use a jacket and trousers of different colors.

Wear the full suit without a tie when you have an important business appointment or an executive presentation in which you are the protagonist and want to project leadership.

Use a combination of jacket and pants of different color when your appointment or event is less formal. Remember that wearing a jacket helps you project a more professional image.

2) You must wear long-sleeved shirt

Never a short sleeve shirt is considered acceptable in this dress code.

Yes, even if the weather is hot in professional environments it is better to wear a long-sleeved business casual shirt. If it is your case to work in a hot area you can roll up your shirt, you will feel more fresh and comfortable (and you will continue to project a professional image).

If you want a cool and comfortable shirt I suggest it be made of cotton fabric, which is ideal to dress in warm temperatures.

Important detail: Now that the shirt is more noticeable is the first garment that should be your correct size. It should fit on your shoulders and be the ideal cut according to your complexion:

  • Slim-cut shirts (tight) if you’re slim.
  • Regular cut shirts (semi-tight) if your build is medium.
  • American or classic cut shirts (loose) if you are sturdy.

long-sleeved shirt

-What is the use of a long-sleeved shirt if you can wear a short-sleeved shirt?

– The answer is: because a long-sleeved shirt projects leadership and a short-sleeved shirt is not, it is more appropriate for informal shirts for the purpose of week.

Important detail: Wear the shirt fastened, that is, inside the pants. On the outside it is appropriate for personal appointments, not for casual business attire.

3) There are 2 types of pants that you can use

Dress pants and gabardine pants. When to use each of them?

The use of dress pants if your company is more conservative and formal, or, when you have a meeting with clients, and corporate presentations, especially if you’re a leader in your company.

I tell you that the trousers with tweezers (those pleated creases next to the zipper) are no longer used, are outdated and will also make you look like you gained weight. Therefore, it is very important that you update the style of your dress pants.

What fabric should your dress pants be? Woolen. Now these pants exist with different thicknesses. In summer, use wool and cotton pants, which are fresher and thinner. In winter wear wool pants and help you get covered in the cold.

The gabardine pants are ideal to wear more relaxed and accessible, ideal for not feel so formal. They are made of cotton fabric, very fresh.

4) Jeans are not allowed

Yes I know – it’s not fair, but that’s the way it is. Jeans are not accepted in the casual business code. You ask yourself, and why do we use them every Friday as a dress policy? It is the way in which companies agree to relax the dress for a more comfortable option.

If on Fridays the company has a policy of using them, you should know that the only jeans allowed are navy blue, with no washed or broken effect.

If your company wears jeans from Monday to Friday then your dress code is not the business casual but the “Smart Casual”. Widely used in technology, fashion, advertising companies.

5) Your belt is a key piece

Man who neglects the importance of the belt will lose presence immediately. Because casual business attire can sometimes do without the bag is for this reason that now the belt has more prominence, is more visible than before.

Check your current belt. If it is old, broken and cracked, change it immediately for a new one. It’s really amazing how many men I find with this oversight, thinking that it does not matter. Quite the opposite.

What rules regarding the belt should you know?

  • That the belt for dress pants is skin and thin.
  • When wearing gabardine trousers use braided or leather belts.
  • When you wear jeans, use a thick leather belt.
  • Always in professional environments your belt should be the same color as your shoes.

6) Your shoes can be loafers or shoelaces

50% of your professionalism is in your shoes. Man who neglects the presentation of his shoes (dirty, worn, and broken) immediately loses all the points he has won in the previous points.

When seen in a suit without a tie, he wears moccasins and you will look great. I recommend you to be thin, as they project more leadership and authority.

Did you know that you can also wear shoes with laces without a tie? So is. And in fact I recommend it every time you want to reflect greater leadership.

Leave shoes with thick soles, suede or cloth for casual Fridays (with gabardine pants or jeans).

7) The pocket handkerchief gives you distinction and leadership

He left his tie and triumphantly returned the pocket handkerchief. This accessory will completely transform your professional attire. More and more men lose the fear of using it because they see that it really makes a difference.

I suggest you place your handkerchief with a casual fit. If you buy your first handkerchief I suggest it be plain white, it will match any outfit. Use it at the next executive meeting or appointment with clients who dress formally. You will see very well!
